Special Features

Conference Meals
Conference meals are available only  to those attending the conference.

We gather sustainably, organically, and regionally raised foods for the conference meals from over 50 PASA members and friends. We are repeating our popular Thursday Evening Winter Picnic Buffet (see the Keynoter Section for more detail). For Friday’s lunch, we’ll pack a “brown bag” full of tasty and healthy fare. That evening, our annual banquet dinner will feature the Leadership Awards. On Saturday we are offering our special PASA luncheon. We are proud of the tremendous food brought together for Farming for the Future, and hope you plan on attending these special feasts. Be sure to check the appropriate boxes on the registration form. Please note: lunch is included in the day-package for our Wednesday and Thursday registrants, and continental breakfast is provided each morning to all registered attendees. Thursday and Friday evening will include a Social Hour Reception for all registrants and as a special treat to all those joining us Thursday, we are hosting a cheese tasting to coincide with the Thursday Evening Social Hour. Take advantage of the remarkable cheesemakers and experts in the house that day — it is sure to be a rich and rewarding experience!

FUTURE FARMERS —
Youth, Kids, and Babysitting

We think your kids will love the “Future Farmer” program at PASA. Programs run Thursday, Friday and Saturday on the same schedule as the adult programs. More detailed information will be sent with your registration confirmation. Space is limited, so sign your kids up early! If your child is attending the Thursday “Future Farmers” program, a lunch needs to be purchased for him/her.

Youth Program (Grades 6–8)
The innovative Sustainable Agriculture Club at Penn State is developing a youth program with George Vahoviak, Program Director at Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center. Contact George at 814-863-2000 or grv1@outreach.psu.edu with questions, ideas or offers to help.

Kids Program (Grades K–5)
Our friends at the Munnell Run Farm Foundation will offer children the opportunity express their creativity, learn about protecting their environment and, of course, SWIM in the hotel’s heated pool! Contact Jill Shankel at 724-662-2242 with questions, ideas or offers to help. Parents are expected to assist during one session. A sign-up sheet will be sent to you prior to the conference.

Babysitting Program (18 months–4 yrs)
Our youngest Future Farmers will have their own special room to play in, and some toys and snacks will be provided. Parents may visit at any time and are expected to contribute a minimum of one session of chaperone services.

Note: The Teen Program will not be offered this year. Teens enjoy special rates for the regular conference program. If your teen would like to assist with the Future Farmer program by providing babysitting services or helping with the Youth or Kids program, please contact Heather House at 814-349-9856.

Charity Auction
We are busy organizing our fifth annual auction
to be unveiled at the upcoming conference. Through our members’ generosity, we will showcase over 120 items to chose from, featuring original artwork, crafts, gift baskets, books, farm tools, vacation get-a-ways, and more. We’ll cordon off a special area for this shopping extravaganza — come ready to peruse and leave with something new! If you have contributions for the auctions, please contact the PASA office by January 5, 2007. We are looking for items in all price ranges.

Exhibit Area
Do you enjoy browsing, learning, shopping and networking? Then you will love the Sustainable Trade Show and Marketplace! We are bringing together companies and organizations with the latest agricultural products, services, programs, and ideas for you to browse and shop. The exhibits and vendors will be open throughout the conference. Don’t miss the “PASA Farm Store” — we will have special conference merchandise and signed books by speakers.

About the Conference Graphic
Alice Kelsey
Our conference image this year is a pastel painting by Alice Kelsey. The original painting, Round Bales/ Bright Sun, has been donated by the artist and will be available for purchase at the live auction during this conference!

Alice’s work focuses primarily on landscapes in central Pennsylvania, and she has received awards at regional and national shows. Alice is a founding member of the Farmland Preservation Artists, a group of Centre County artists who promote the preservation and appreciation of farming and farmland through their work. (They will have a show at the conference.)

“I have always lived in rural areas and feel deeply connected to the forms and forces within the landscape,” says Alice. “Working in oil and pastel, I strive to convey the atmosphere of a particular time and place, the depth of the moment which caught my eye. I’m especially drawn to open fields, hedgerows, and woods edges. These are places where the ways that people live and work within the land interact with the forces of nature.”

Alice Kelsey grew up in Chester County and graduated from Westtown School. She received a B.A. degree from Hamilton College, focusing on biology and art, and a M.D. degree from Michigan State University. Alice is now a full-time painter and lives with her husband and three children near Warriors Mark, Centre County. For more information, visit www.alicekelsey.com.

Friends of the Conference
Let’s make friends! At the Farming for the Future conference we learn, laugh, talk with and listen to interesting people, eat well, and gather new ideas for implementing in the field whether on a farm or in other arenas. The 2007 event will foster an extensive network of friends and continue the tradition of supplying the PASA membership with a high quality program. We want to ensure that those who want to join in this friendship can, by keeping the registration fees affordable. Please consider becoming a Friend of the Conference.

We are fortunate to have the sponsorship support of numerous companies and organizations but there is a grassroots community of individuals who, by becoming Friends, enable the PASA conference to be accessible and to flourish. Your gift of $100 (tax-deductible) will be gratefully acknowledged at the conference and in the PASA newsletter. Please indicate your contribution on the registration form. Thank you for being a Friend!

FarmArts
FarmArts has a new look this year: FILM! We’re offering a feature-length film during each of the workshop sessions to give you a chance to catch up on provocative documentaries. Time has been allotted for discussion following the films. So sit back and enjoy PASA THEATRE!

And we wouldn’t dream of hosting this conference without the live music program. Once again we will have the energetic efforts of Louise Schorn Smith and John Lozier to thank for coordinating a remarkable music program. The popular Performing Artists for Sustainable Agriculture booth will be a great place to pick up the latest disk from local artists, and throughout the conference we’ll showcase some of our very own talented members. If you would like to contribute to the melodious times, please contact Louise and John at music@pasafarming.org.

In addition to film and music, we will paper the conference center with memorable quotes from famous farmers and poets. This proved to be a popular exhibit last year and we think it’s worth repeating. If you have a quote you’d like to submit for possible inclusion, please send it to quotes@pasafarming.org.
