PASA Western Region - Local Food Month

Celebrate local flavor at its peak during Local Food Month this September! This year marks the7th annual Local Food Month celebration and we are excited to invite you to join the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA) and the Buy Fresh Buy Local® program in bringing awareness to the food related challenges we face in our communities and the work being done to find local sustainable solutions. The goal of Local Food Month is to encourage direct participation in the local food system through education and celebration of healthy and ethical food choices, sustainable farming practices, and cooking with seasonal local foods. Through a dynamic calendar of events, strong community partnerships, and a Buy Fresh Buy Local Challenge, Local Food Month highlights efforts that support local farms and food businesses and all of the grassroots work being done by organizations, businesses, and volunteer groups in our region that strive to support a healthier regional food system. This year, our goal is to involve 500 people in western Pennsylvania’s 1st ever Local Food Challenge!We’re asking everyone to join the movement by committing to participating in activitiesthat show their support of our local food system during the month of September. This could include attending a class on gardening, composting, or food preservation; hosting a potluck with a local food theme; blogging about food and farming; attending a sustainable food related film screening or book discussion; volunteering at a community garden; or speaking with public officials about support for local sustainable farms and food businesses. There will be raffles and contests with fun prizes for participants to win. Many opportunities to participate will be shared through the Local Food Month community calendar of food–related events, but the choices are endless and we welcome new ideas! WHAT IS LOCAL FOOD MONTH?

September is harvest season in western Pennsylvania, and, for the seventh year, the region-wide Local Food Month celebration provides a full calendar of opportunities for everyone to enjoy and learn about local food and local farmers. Presented by the Buy Fresh Buy Local® program of the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA) and Eat’n Park Restaurants, Local Food Month offers delicious, and educational events spotlighting western Pennsylvania’s vibrant local food community every day of the month, including a new interactive Buy Fresh Buy Local Challenge.
