New Morning Farm
Jim, and his wife Moie Kimball Crawford, own and operate New Morning Farm, a 95-acre certified-organic vegetable farm in south central Pennsylvania. Over the years, the Crawfords have built a multi-faceted, successful direct-marketing system. They have organized two well-established farmers markets and helped found a wholesale marketing cooperative with a group of growers - Tuscarora Organic Growers Cooperative, Inc. New Morning Farm markets (both wholesale and retail) various locally-produced foods year-round in addition to its own produce.
Both Moie and Jim have been active members of PASA since the very early planning stages of what was to become our organization. Jim has also served on PASA’s Board of Directors.
Jim fondly remembers a small gathering of “kindred spirits” back in the early '90s. It was Tim Bowser, who would become the first Executive Director of PASA, that called together this group of folks after realizing a need for an organization that focused on a variety of sustainable farming practices that addressed issues family farmers faced, and filled a need for those who wanted to support "alternative" agriculture (as it was called back then).
According to Jim, “In that first year we wanted to have a kick-off event that got more people involved – that was the first of what would become our annual Farming for the Future Conference.” That first gathering was over 22 years ago now and Jim still marvels that "the high quality of the planning, of the overall organization, and of the educational opportunities offered at the conference has been maintained for this many years. It is really remarkable.”
What would Jim offer to anyone who may be considering attending their first PASA conference this year? “I feel like a salesman for the PASA conference! I encourage new people to attend all the time.” Jim continued, “The spirit of what is PASA - that feeling of solidarity, mutual support, commitment to the cause, and excitement for our kind of farming is contagious and wonderfully inspiring at every single conference I’ve attended. I have never missed one and hope I never will. It is really a transforming experience to network with those who share your goals and ideals, and especially so for those who may often feel isolated in their day-to-day lives, as I sometimes do.”
