Diversifying Your Farm with Small Grains
White Frost Farm - Danville, Montour County

This field day is a collaboration between PASA and the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA NY).
Cathy and Kit Kelley are taking the next step in farm diversification and adding small grains to the mix. Their longstanding interest in milling and marketing flour from grains grown on their own farm was further sparked while attending a (SARE funded) Northeast Organic Wheat workshop last year. Working with Elizabeth Dyck, from NOFA NY, the Kelleys are involved in a hard winter wheat trial, with the intent to find the varieties of wheat best suited to their soil to produce a quality flour with the rich flavors and textures desired by local bakers. Check out small-scale flour mills with Elizabeth Dyck, and hear about options for larger scale milling. Spend the day touring farm and field, discussing failures and successes, and learning about small grain production – from seed to crop to mill, to tasting the finished flour.
The Kelleys grow a variety of vegetables and keep flocks of free ranging layers and broilers on their organically managed farm, selling at farmers markets, to restaurants, and off the farm. Growing, buying and selling locally is at the heart of their mission & business.
