The Lands at Hillside Farms - Shavertown, Luzerne County
Tuesday, June 23
10:00am—3:00pm
$15 PASA Members, $25 all others. Lunch will be provided.
This field day is a collaboration between PASA and the National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT).
Spend the day getting the lowdown on SPIN Farming ® with Andy Pressman and Lee Rinehart, Agriculture Specialists with NCAT/ATTRA (National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service). Small Plot Intensive (SPIN) Farming ® is a non-technical farming system designed for significant earnings from land bases under one acre. Minimal infrastructure, reliance on hand labor, utilization of existing water sources, and situating close to markets keep investment and overhead low. Best of all, you can SPIN farm anywhere! Discussion will focus on planning and design, soil fertility, planting, weeding, harvesting techniques, and marketing. Then out to the plot for a hands-on demonstration of tool choice and use, garden mapping and layout, bed preparation, planting, harvesting, and post-harvest handling. Before the day is over, we’ll head over to Wilkes University for a look at the first working U.S. campus SPIN farm ® and demonstration site.
Andy Pressman is a certified Permaculture designer specializing in forest gardening, with experience on diversified organic farms in several states. Livestock Specialist Lee Rinehart has previous experience as an extension agent in Texas and Montana, as well as farm-based experience as the manager of a beef cattle operation. Currently, Lee and Andy work together at NCAT providing technical instruction on farm energy conservation and alternatives, small plot intensive farming, organic farming, and livestock pasture management.
