Are you interested in establishing or farming American ginseng on your forestland to diversify sources of revenue? Join Eric Burkhart from Penn State’s Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center for an in-depth workshop on ginseng forest farming in Pennsylvania and the region. We'll start the day with a slide presentation reviewing the basics including ginseng biology, husbandry, regulations, and markets. Following a nutritious homegrown lunch, we’ll head out for a woods walk to discuss site selection and planting options. Taken for energy, stress reduction, and to boost the immune system, ginseng is marketed in its natural root form or made into teas and tonics possessing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant elements. Prior knowledge or familiarity with ginseng will be useful but is not a prerequisite. All participants will be given ginseng planting stock to take home.
Eric Burkhart is an instructor and plant science program director for Shaver's Creek Environmental Center. He provides training and outreach in botany and horticulture, including teaching courses for the PSU School of Forest Resources on agroforestry, woody and herbaceous plant identification, and nonnative invasive flora. Eric conducts research on native plants of economic and conservation importance (i.e. American ginseng and goldenseal) and offers practical guidance through related workshops and publications.
