ADVOCACY FOR A SAFE, SANE, SUSTAINABLE & FAIR FOOD SYSTEM

In coalition with other organizations, we monitor legislative activities on local, statewide and national levels, making recommendations for policies that promote such issues as farmland preservation, farmer retention, protection of natural resources, and increased access to healthy food.

The following list of issue categories captures most of the concerns we have heard over the past few years and represents the priority areas in which the PASA board of directors is working to develop policy:

    •   Food Safety/Sovereignty – e.g., new FDA standards for food safety, raw milk, rBGH, antibiotic use with livestock, farmers market regulations, food access…
    •   Nutrient Management – e.g., Chesapeake Bay TMDL protocol, new statewide regulations affecting small farms in particular…
    •   Marcellus Shale Drilling/Fracking – e.g., regulations, extraction taxes, water quality, impact on food quality and markets for local food…
    •   Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) – e.g., impact on organic farmers, animal health, herbicide proliferation and resistance…
    •   Farm Bill – e.g., commodity reform, support of sustainable ag programs…

You can see – and no doubt already know – there is no shortage of issues for us to be concerned about.

PASA is working to be more be more effective in addressing policy objectives in a thorough manner. When taking a position on any important issue, we do not like to simply “sign on” to the work of others or rely on their research and strategies, which can sometimes be tainted with ulterior motives. We want to understand issues thoroughly and to take the position(s) with the most positive implications for our members and our mission of sustainability.
