Sheep Dairying and Cheesemaking
Date: Friday, June 9
Time: 2:00-6:00pm
Location: Otterbein Acres, FRANKLIN Co.
Family owned and operated, Otterbein Acres is a 96-acre sheep and cow grass-based dairy located at the foot of Blue Mountain. After lambing in March, milking begins in May. All of the sheep milk is turned into cheese in the farm's small cheese house. The farm currently produces a delicious Romano that is marketed both on the farm and in retail stores.
During this field day, the Fishers will lead us on a brief pasture tour followed by a look at their cheese house. Discussion will include pasture maintenance, fencing, herd health and cheese production. This field day is being held in the afternoon so that participants have the opportunity to watch the work dogs bring the herd in for milking. In addition, the Fishers will demonstrate their unique, completely manual sheep milking carousel, designed and built by John Fisher himself.
