Do you own a farm business and are looking towards the future, perhaps retiring, scaling back from farming or transitioning from a farm business to take on another adventure?  If so, you will want to mark your calendar to attend one of two “Farm Succession and Transition” workshops PA Farm Link has scheduled for 2016.

Lycoming County March 19th 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.   Eagle Grange #1 Hall, Montgomery, PA.

Butler County April 7th 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.   Farm Service Agency Office, Rt. 68, Butler, PA.

These workshops presented by PA Farm Link. PA Farm Link, a non-profit dedicated to “Linking Farmers to the Future”, will provide information on various aspects of creating a Farm Business Succession/Transition plan.  Often farm families start to discuss passing the farm business to the next generation, but get “stuck” on how to proceed.  These workshops will help work through some of the myths and stumbling blocks of moving forward with a farm succession and transition plan.

Topics covered will include: Succession/Transition from a Legal Perspective; Estate Planning and Necessary Documents; Farm Family Communication Dynamics & Challenges; Family Meeting Guidelines; and Generational Challenges & Strategies.

Speakers will include: Attorney Jennifer Denchak Wetzel (Lycoming) and Attorney Robert Clark (Butler); Jared Grissinger, PA Department of Agriculture; and Darlene Livingston, PA Farm Link.

Speakers will answer questions and breakout sessions will be held for both landowners and next generation to discuss their challenges and brainstorm solutions and strategies to address the issues.  Certified International Farm Transition Network facilitators will be available to assist families in planning the next steps. Participants will be encouraged to ask questions, and will be given a list of potential resources in the area to provide future assistance with a farm succession/transition plan.

Included in the workshop is a copy of: “Planning the Future of Your Farm” Pennsylvania Edition (normally sold for $10.60 per copy).

Registration is required by March 4th for the Lycoming workshop.  Registration for the Butler workshop is March 24th.  Registration can be completed online at or by calling (717) 705-2121.

A nominal registration fee:  $5 for Lycoming thanks to the sponsorship of the Eagle Grange #1 Hall; and $12.50 per registrant or $11 for 2 or more registrants for the Butler workshop.  Registration includes lunch and materials. Multiple attendees from the same business are encouraged to participate so all pertinent parties, especially multiple generations, can gather information.

These PA Farm Link Farm Succession and Transition Workshops are supported by NERME and PA Department of Agriculture.  This material is based upon work supported by USDA/NIFA under Award Number 2012-49200-20031.
