Event Description
The farm manager at Urban Tree Connection, Nykisha Madison, and Extension Educator Dori Buttz will tour participants through the UTC urban farm in Philadelphia and describe how they have attempted to provide good irrigation throughout the growing season. Discussion will not only involve ways to provide this diminishing and essential element (water) but also issues involved in the quality of water.

Urban areas (especially black and working class) often have to deal with water tainted from lead and other pollutants dumped by industry, in addition to restricted water access. Similarly, rural areas often have industrial pollution issues, as well as pollution from neighboring farms, and scarcity in the form of disappearing aquifers.

This workshop should not only teach the participant ways to deliver water efficiently and effectively in a growing situation, but also help them to start thinking about how to protect our limited water supply for the future.
Speaker & Host Information
The Urban Tree Connection (UTC) works with residents in Philadelphia’s historically marginalized urban communities to revitalize their neighborhoods by transforming abandoned open spaces into safe and functional places that inspire and promote positive human interaction. Founded in 1989 and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1997, UTC works with residents of West Philadelphia's Haddington neighborhood to develop community-driven greening and gardening projects on vacant land. Our aim is to cultivate community leadership, improve community health, and develop a local sustainable food system.

Nykisha Madison was UTC's Garden Instructor prior to transitioning into the Community Markets Manager position. Nykisha believes in buying local and eating fresh. She says, "Your medicine and healing is around you, Identify and tap in! See you in the soil!"
