Event Description
Dave and Anita Avvisato began their modern, 15-acre farmstead operation eight years ago with a small vegetable garden. From these humble beginnings, their operation has evolved to encompass bees and chickens, horses and hay, field crops and high tunnels, and on-farm compost, all in a naturally enriching flow of fertility. Dave notes, “The only thing we want leaving the farm is product. No waste!” Far Away Farms sells on-farm and at market, as well as to a grower’s cooperative and some retail accounts. They are in the process of becoming Animal Welfare Certified. Once a hobby for the couple, the farm is now a full-time vocation for Dave. They look forward to sharing their systems and thoughts with attendees, and hope to help others achieve their small farm dream.

This event includes lunch. Rain-date will be Saturday, August 5.
Registration will be open from 4/10/2017 to 7/28/2017 at noon.
Speaker & Host Information
Farmer Mike Ahlert, along with his wife, Charis Lindrooth, are the owners of Red Earth Farm. Red Earth Farm’s CSA program was ten years old in 2016 and consists over 600 members.

Farm Manager Kim Butz joined the Red Earth team in 2016, in part to help the farm navigate the regulatory aspects of their Harmonized GAP-certification. Kim has a background in agriculture, as well as the natural gas industry, which served as a good training ground in learning to work with government agencies and regulatory compliance.

Brenda Sheaffer is the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Fruit/Vegetable Commodity Program Supervisor. She has worked with Red Earth regarding their Harmonized GAP certification, and has performed many inspections and consultations with farms around GAP, in general.

What should I prepare/bring with me to this event?
This event will be outside, so dress accordingly.
Bring a reusable water bottle to fill on site and stay hydrated.
