Event Description
This half day event will be a discussion regarding the challenges cows face at the different stages of their lives, including conversation around genetics, nutrition, and how the soil of the pasture directly influences the health of the animal and, ultimately, the milk. Retired veterinarian Mark Lopez, owner of Wholesome Dairy Farms in Douglassville, PA, will lead the group from the pasture to the barn and, finally, to the on-site store that sells the farm’s finished, raw milk products. Questions and conversation along the way are encouraged. Lunch will follow. This day is appropriate for farmers, and for consumers who want to learn more about grass-fed dairy.
Registration will be open from 08/08/2016 to 10/07/2016 at noon.
Speaker Information
Mark Lopez, VMD, studied veterinary medicine at the University of Pennsylvania focusing on dairy production medicine. After 5 years working on large dairies in Texas, Dr. Lopez returned to his family’s farm in Yellow House to start a dairy of his own: Wholesome Dairy Farms. Dedicated to the local food movement and lowering carbon emissions, the top priority of Dr. Lopez and Wholesome Dairy Farms is the cows. For the good of the environment, as well as the health of the cows, the herd at Wholesome Dairy Farms is grass-fed on pasture, managed in a rotational grazing system.
