The Josie Porter Farm is established on a 48-acre tract of land, acquired by Stroud Township with Open Space monies and protected in perpetuity. This farm is a model for creating access and opportunity for emerging farmers to grow food for communities that does not require a large capital investment and to become stewards of fallow land intended for agricultural use. Participants are invited to come learn how the Josie Porter Farm is using this preserved open space to create opportunities for people to meet and connect to address issues surrounding food security and how to keep farming alive in Monroe County. We will begin at the Stroud Township Municipal Center, where township officials will discuss how this five-year collaboration is meeting the goals of the township, the community and the farm. Heidi Secord and Gary Bloss will talk about using sustainable farming to conserve public land, foster environmental stewardship, and advance local food production. To close the day, we will head over to the Josie Porter Farm for a tour of the preserved land.
