PASA Western Region Master Class - Fall in the Organic Orchard

First in a seasonal sequence of workshops about organic orcharding. Primarily, we'll be dealing with apples, though many principles might well apply to other tree fruit. Since this is the first time at the Kretschmanns, we'll spend a little time familiarizing with the history of the orchard itself. You'll see three blocks of apple trees, one of which is trelised, planted at about 10 year intervals. We'll focus on what concerns the grower at this time of the season, what he/she is looking for and looking at. This might include diseases, insects, assessing strategies which were used this season. Since it's natural in the fall to think about and order trees for planting the following year (and generally we don't mean spring of 2013, but spring of 2014), we'll converse about varieties and rootstocks and how to plan the once-in-a-lifetime orchard site selection and preparation. Also, since this is the harvest season for apples, we'll spend a little time considering storage. Next meeting will be in the winter during pruning season.

Don Kretschmann of Kretschmann Organic Farm has been growing organic fruits and vegetables since 1971.  Tour the Kretschmann's organic apple orchard and learn about the history of the orchard itself.  See three blocks of apple trees, one of which is trellised, planted at about 10 year intervals.  Discussion will focus on what concerns the grower during the fall season, including identifying diseases and insects, and assessing strategies for the fall harvest season, including picking and storage.  Since it's natural in the fall to think about and order trees for planting the following year, Don will lead a conversation about varieties and rootstocks and how to plan the once-in-a-lifetime orchard site selection and preparation.

This Master Class is part of of the 2012 Back to Basics Learning Series, and the first of four seasonal organic orchard workshops that will be hosted at Kretschmann Organic Farm. Over the course of the 2012 season, the PASA Western Region will be offering a series of Master Classes, Field Days, Farm Tours, and Networking Potlucks to bring people together around topics related to the foundations of  sustainable farming.  These programs are great learning and networking opportunities for aspiring and beginning farmers, and even experienced farmers looking for some new ideas!  Farm apprentices and interns are especially welcome.

Workshop Cost: $10 PASA Members, $15 Non-Members
