By Lisa Goodale-Brinton
Welcome to new PASA member, Chris Powell of Good Harvest Farms, LLC  near Strasburg, PA. In the business of sustainable food production for 25 years, family run business, Good Harvest Farm, has an extensive list of offerings. Included are wide varieties of vegetables, greens, and fruit, locally sourced if not grown on the 30 acre farm. Also available are bedding plants in season, hanging baskets, perennials, herbs, seeds, espoma and natural garden solutions, pottery planters, compost supplies, custom services and CSA shares.

Chris Powell says that his original vision for the farm is similar to its actuality except in size, as he has had to expand significantly to meet customer demands. He also began selling mostly wholesale but now has transitioned , with a wider customer base to completely retail.  In recent years, Chris  realizes that his customer base has become like family and close community to all who work at Good Harvest Farm.

His goal has always been to farm as organically as possible. He finds that sweet corn is his most challenging crop to keep in organic production. Chris reported that he has found PASA resources have saved him time and money finding better garden solutions.

In addition to the family farm in Strasburg, which is open from March -December, Good Harvest Farm has a market stand in Wayne, which stays open all year. The hydroponic greenhouses in Strasburg provide fresh greens year round. Chris uses beneficials and biological predators to maintain healthy greenhouses. He also employs sustainable practices such as: crop rotation, companion planting, composting, and trickle irrigation in all areas of production.

Chris reports, in stride with the thriving farm to table movement, he has broadened his cultivar choices to include more novel types which now often out sell the more traditional version. He sees "Buy Fresh, Buy Local" as a vital growing movement in sustainable food production. Chris  finds through PASA membership, the opportunity to learn from an  exchange of other growers facing similar problems, and is heartened to have found an active community of sustainable farmers.
